Novi City is part of Oakland County in Michigan with over 47,000 residents according to the 2010 census. Located 25 miles northwest of Detroit and northeast of Ann Arbor, this small city hides many surprises. Initially part of Farmington Township in 1832, it was later given the name by a resident named Dr. J.C. Emery at the suggestion of his wife. They came up with the name as they are looking for a possible shorter name than Farmington.
The city has one of the most controversial names in all of Michigan cities. There are several debates surrounding it, the most popular was that the Novi pertains to as being the 6th toll gate on the Grand River Toll road, having the signboard as No. VI. People have misread this name as Novi instead of number six. However, the toll road was not constructed until the 1850s and the township was named in 1832. Another story about the name claims that Novi was about the township being the number 6 stop on the Holly, Wayne & Monroe Railway. Yet, the railroad system was not established until 1871, four decades after it was named. Another popular story about its city name is that it’s the 6th stagecoach outside of Detroit. It may sound like a coincidence but these three popular stories about the city talk about how Novi was the 6th stop within Michigan’s railroad system.
Novi started out great and as early as 1959, it was considering becoming a city. There were elections, although both unsuccessful in petitioning the town as a city in 1959 and 1962. But the journey is becoming a city was not easy for Novi; they initially planned to file for a petition in 1967 but because of the court proceeding special election was delayed. It later received official approval in becoming Novi City in 1969.
Novi residents took careful measures in discussing cityhood as was their first major step in having economic growth after the Great Depression. They cast their votes in May 1968 when more than 6,000 residents agreed for the charter commission. By the year 1970, their population ballooned to more almost 10,000 residents. The city of Novi first held their City Council when Mayor Joseph Crupi took oath as the first ever city mayor.
