Saint Clair Shores

SAINT CLAIR SHORES MI 48080,48081,48082

St. Clair Shores has one of the most amazing views in Macomb County, Michigan. A suburban city located northeast of downtown Detroit with a population of 59,715 residents as per 2010 United States Census Bureau census.

The French settlers were the first known people who inhabited the area as early as 1710 which they call the area as L’anse Creuse. The former interurban railroad of Jefferson Ave near Nine Mile Road had used the same name in their stop. L’anse Creuse name still lives on as they name some of the schools after it like L’Anse Creuse High School in Harrison Township and L’Anse Creuse Public Schools in Macomb County.

The famous amusement park Jefferson Beach was built in St. Clair Shores in 1927. It features the longest roller coaster ride in the country. But in 1955, a devastating fire destroyed most of the structures in the park. They eventually decided to rebuild the park but slowly converted it into a marina. By the time it was finished in 1959, the park replaced several buildings to give room for a marina.

The city is known to have its unique features and events. The Shore Club Highrise, or locally known as “9 Mile Tower” serves as the tallest building in St. Clair Shores and located on Nine Mile Road and Jefferson Avenue. St. Clair Shores held an annual event of Memorial Day Parade known as “Nautical Mile” because it highlights the best of the city’s homegrown boat dealers, establishments, and marinas.

As a member of Miss America Organization, the longest running beauty pageant in the country, the city offers scholarships to young women ages 17 to 24 years old. Miss St Clair serves and volunteers in her city to be an inspiration for others while preparing for the Miss Michigan Pageant.

St. Clair Shores used to be part of Erin Township from 1843 until 1911. Some of its areas make up a large portion of Eastpointe and the Grosse Pointes. It was considered the largest village in the US before its incorporation in 1951. In 1911 they changed its name as Lake Township until 2009 when the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores filed for a petition to incorporate it as a city.

Due to its very beautiful location within the shoreline of Lake Saint Clair, St Clair Shores drew out the attention of hundreds of people after the World War II.  Today, St. Clair Shores is famous for its hockey association as the city won more state championships than any teams in the US.
