Auburn Hills

History of Auburn HIlls MI

Auburn Hills or formerly known as Pontiac Township is part of the Oakland County in Michigan. According to the 2010 Census, the city houses about 21,412 people, 8,844 households, and 4,923 families. With a population density of 1,289.9 inhabitants per square mile, it has a racial makeup of 66.3% White, 18.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 8.9% Asian, and an estimated 2.7% from other ethnicities. The city is known as the US headquarters of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the famous Oakland University, and The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The city follows Interstate 75 which paved the way in becoming a very prosperous business district in the state. It all started in 1821 when its first settler, Aaron Webster founded his sawmill and grist mill which attracted people from its surrounding cities. Its town soon flourished at what is known today Auburn and Squirrel Roads.

In 1826, just years after the government laid out streets in the city, Auburn rivaled its neighboring Pontiac City. However, in the 1860s, it lost its prosperity and renamed as Amy in 1880. The city officially became as Auburn Height in 1919, just north of Pontiac Township.

Auburn Hills is known for its automobile industry, it began when the automobile genius John Dodge bought a farmhouse just 3 miles northeast of the city. He used the space as his vacation house, but when his oldest child Winifred Dodge married Wesson Seyburn, they settled on a nearby farmhouse. Seyburn, being a real estate heiress created filled their estate with great amenities anyone could ask for. Both estates included a massive hunting ground, dog kennels, horse stables and a 5,000-square-foot Colonial Revival house. But in 1976, Pontiac Township purchased the estate in 1976 and used the current building for government use. Today, this bold move founded the Auburn Hills Civic Center.

The two rival cities, Pontiac Township and Auburn Heights became one as the City of Auburn in 1983. However, the first use of Auburn Hills was first coined in 1964 by Oakland Community College. Previously as a Nike missile base, the community college named their campus because of its unique location; at Featherstone and Squirrel roads which is near the hilly terrain area. Two other colleges, Baker College and Oakland University can be found in the city. This means that residents of Auburn City have access to quality education.

During the early 1980s, a time where engineers and bright minds were just starting to invent computers and other modern-day technology, Oakland University teamed up with developers. Together, they created a technology and research park on barren land. Five years later, this unused land became the home of Chrysler, Comerica, and EDS. Today, their populations swell up to 80,000 people working in tech and office buildings in the area.

Even though Auburn Hills has great industrialized businesses, it was able to retain some of its rural atmospheres. However, it steadily developing over the years as shopping malls, downtown area, and other Great Lakes Crossing Mall make this city a great shopping destination.
