Southfield is a city in Oakland County Michigan located in the northern suburb of Detroit. According to the 2010 US census, the city houses about 71,739 residents. The city got its name as it’s the location of “south field” of Bloomfield Township. On July 12, 1830, the Town 1 north and 10 west first organized as Ossewa Township but eventually changed to Southfield Township. They had their first post office in 1833 and their town hall was built in 1873.
In 1620, the Teuch-so-Gion-die Indian Tribe along with another unknown tribe used to inhabit the area where Detroit will soon be established. Several Indian tribes including Hurons, Miscountins, Ojibwas, Ottagomies, Ottawas, Pottawatomies, and Twigtnees or Miamis also inhabited the parts of Michigan. Then there are bands of Iroquois and other tribes scattered within the territory. But between the years 1649 and 1672, the Iroquois either destroyed or exiled many tribes in the region.
Governor Lewis Cass along with his companions surveyed Southfield in 1817. Not long after that, first settlers came to Southfield from Royal Oak, Birmingham, Michigan and from other states like New York and Vermont. John Daniels, one of the very first settlers came to Southfield in 1823. Among the pioneers of Southfield are the Heth, Stephens, Harmon, McClelland and Thompson families.
These pioneers came to Southfield Township during the 1950s and formed the group “’Save Our Southfield Committee”. Together they lent their money amounting to $500 to promote the incorporation of Southfield as a city. They made two petitions at the Oakland County Courthouse in Pontiac on December 14, 1950. Kelly of the Lathrup Village filed the first petitions to incorporate their village and was followed by Emanuel Christensen to file a petition to incorporate the entire township. But Southfield did not become as a city charter until April 21, 1958, with an estimated 29,000 residents. The city added Evergreen Hills Golf Course in 1972 and expanded to Southfield Pavilion in 1978 as their new public safety building.
